Amsterdam, the venerable capital city of the Netherlands, hosted the 1928 Summer Olympics as the world’s greatest athletic competition was held for the ninth time in modern history. The United States won the most gold medals (22) and overall medals (56), with the famous Tarzan actor Johnny Weissmuller earning a pair of gold medals for the red, white, and blue. Paavo Nurmi, the legendary “Flying Finn” won his ninth and final gold medal in the 10,000m, while Uruguay clinched a second consecutive gold medal in the men’s soccer tournament. The Amsterdam Olympics were an unqualified success and the first Olympics to contain women’s sports.
Offered in this lot is a fantastic gold medal from the 1928 Amsterdam Summer Olympics. This approximately 2-inch diameter gilt silver medal features an intricate high-relief etching of a scene depicting Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. Etched in high-relief next to Nike is “IX Olympiade Amsterdam 1928”. The reverse side of the medal features a scene of roughly a half-dozen men carrying an Olympic champion on their shoulders. This medal weighs approximately 68.57 grams and is in excellent condition!
