Juan Alberto Schiaffino earned his status as a national hero in Uruguay with a scintillating performance in the 1950 FIFA World Cup, as Uruguay moved to defend its title in the inaugural 1930 FIFA World Cup for the first time in neighboring Brazil. Schiaffino, a future star at AS Roma and AC Milan in Italy’s Serie A, scored three goals in the tournament as Uruguay notched a historic victory against prohibitive favorites Brazil in the tournament final at Rio de Janeiro’s Estadio Maracana. Schiaffino scored Uruguay’s first goal in the final, evening the score at 1-1 in the 66th minutes just a quarter of an hour before Alcides Ghiggia fired the celeste to an iconic 2-1 win. Schiaffino earned 21 full international caps with Uruguay, scoring nine goals and later managing the national team in the 1970’s.
This offered medal features a high relief etching of the 1950 FIFA World Cup logo, “IV Campeonato Mundial de Futebol”, and “Brasil 1950” on the front. The back of the medal boasts a high relief etching of the Maracana and the text “Rio de Janeiro / Estadio Municipal”. This medal is a fantastic relic from the player recognized by many as Uruguay’s greatest all-time soccer player. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
