Former Major League pitcher Bobby Shantz had a solid 16-year career with the Philadelphia/Kansas City A’s, New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates, Houston *, St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies, where he compiled a 119-99 record and solid 3.38 ERA. Shantz was also adept with the glove, earning eight Gold Glove Awards, including a run of six in a row from 1957 through 1962.

Offered here is one of the Gold Glove Awards presented to Bobby Shantz and this one is from his 1960 season with the New York Yankees. This is one of the oldest Gold Glove Awards to come up for auction as its design differs from the more modern models with the Gold Glove and two gold baseballs. This award has a 16 x 6 ½ -inch base that is approximately 3-inches high. A gold Rawlings glove rests on a gold-painted holder and has “MAJOR LEAGUE All-Star FIELDING TEAM” printed in black on the palm. The red Rawlings label is on the back of the glove and “Rawlings MADE IN U.S.A.” is printed in black on the lower palm. A 9 ½ x 9 ½ x 9 ½ x 9 ½ -inch wood diamond is mounted on the back with a gold-plated round top baseball infield that has “RAWLINGS GOLD GLOVE AWARD” etched on the top. A single-piece gold-plated baseball on a pedestal is mounted on the right. The front of the base has a gold plate that has etched “P-BOBBY SHANTZ THE SPORTIN NEWS AMERICAN LEAGUE ALL-STAR FIELDING TEAM” with “19” on the left and “60” on the right. This award shows some wear with scratches on the top of the wood base and the wood diamond attached on the back with a metal holder is still attached via the metal holder, but loose from the wood base. There is also additional edge and surface wear.
