Known as the Iron Horse and the original holder of baseball’s all-time consecutive games played streak, Lou Gehrig was arguably the anchor behind the great New York Yankee teams of the late 1920s and 1930s. Before he succumbed to the disease in 1941 that would bear his name, Gehrig finished his career with a hefty .340 batting average, 2,721 hits, 423 home runs, winner of six World Series titles and played in 2,130 consecutive games until that streak was broken in 1995 by Cal Ripken Jr.

By 1939, a declining Gehrig forced himself out of the lineup following the April 30th game against the Washington Senators. With his condition worsening, Gehrig and his wife Eleanor ultimately sought the council of the Mayo Clinic and specifically Charles William Mayo and after days of testing, was determined to have Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) – Gehrig never played baseball again.

Offered here is a 4 ¼ x 2 ¾ -inch card signed by Lou Gehrig. This card has printed on the front “Laurel Card” in dark blue with “NEW YORK WORLD’S AIR” in red below and “Academy of Sport” printed in dark blue below that. The New York World’s Fair logo is printed in dark blue on the upper left corner. Gehrig signed his name in bold black pen on the “Instructor of the day” dotted line. “SCHOOL of BASEBALL” is prominently printed in red above Gehrig’s signature and two lines above read “This certifies that…” and “of….attended class in” – all in dark blue print. The back of this card has “STUDENT’S LAUREL CARD” with the logo of “AMERICAN ACADEMY OF SPORTS GOLDEN LAUREL NEW YORK WORLD’S FAIR” below and the mission statement below that with “Christy Walsh, Director of Sports” at the bottom. This card is in good condition, especially on the front with Gehrig’s signature and the back has tape or adhesive removal marks in each corner and in the center. A great single signature from Lou Gehrig and this comes with a LOA from JSA (BB41080).
