Offered here is an incredibly rare Geronimo signed cut that is part of a late 19th century autograph album. In addition to Geronimo’s signature, there are approximately 30 signatures of various dignitaries from that era. This piece also brings together two of the most famous figures of the Indian Wars of the late 19th century – Geronimo and Nelson A. Miles, the general who convinced Geronimo to surrender in 1886. Miles had taken over for General George Crook in 1886 to pursue Geronimo in Arizona and later negotiated the surrender of the Apache leader later that year. Geronimo signed his name “GERONIMO” in pencil on a 3 ½ x 1 ¾-inch piece of blue paper. Miles signed his name “Nelson A. Miles” in pencil while adding the inscription “Major General US Army”.

Other signatures in this album include Russel A. Alger and Garret A. Hobart – who were President McKinley’s War and Navy Secretaries, along with William R. Shafter, Wesley Merritt and John R. Brooke who were generals and other military figures such as John J. Pershing, Lew Wallace, William S. Rosecrans and James Forsythe. Other signatures include William Jennings Bryan, Levi P. Morton, Eugene Field, James Whitcomb Riley, Palmer Cox, Julia Marlowe, Joseph Jefferson, William Rosecrans and several others. The album measures approximately 9 ½ x 12 ¼ inches containing 68 unpaginated leaves and is bound in a soft black leatherette wrap. The album is in good overall condition, with the wraps and spine rubbed, especially on the corners, along with toning to the pages. This comes with a LOA from the University Archives, along with individual LOAs from JSA (BB68452 – Geronimo, BB68450 – Miles, BB68447 – Morton, BB68446 – Bryan, BB68451 – Pershing, BB68445 – Wallace, BB68444 – Rosecrans, BB68448 – Forsythe and BB68449 – Cox).
