Jake “The Raging Bull” LaMotta and “Sugar Ray” Robinson staged six epic battles during their careers together as boxers, the last which fought on February 14, 1951 and pictured here, would come to be known as The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. Brutally depicted in director Martin Scorsese’s 1980 film “Raging Bull,” the real fight was just as vicious with Robinson ultimately winning on a technical knockout after pounding LaMotta with a long succession of unanswered blows: “Ray I never went down,” LaMotta inscribed along with his signature “Jake LaMotta, Raging Bull,” in bold silver Sharpie on this classic piece of vintage fight photography capturing the moment when the ref stopped the fight. Photo comes with JSA certification # D 49770.
