Four years after winning the World Series, the New York Mets were once again up to something amazing in 1973. Led by staff ace - and NL Cy Young Award winner Tom Seaver (19-10 record, 2.08 ERA, 251 strikeouts), the Mets finished first in the NL East division. They went up against the heavily favored Cincinnati Reds in the NLCS, a series the Mets would win, three games to two, to capture the National League pennant. The Oakland Athletics would eventually defeat the Mets in a seven-game World Series, ending another magical season for New York. Besides Seaver, the team – managed by Yogi Berra – had three additional starters post double-digit win totals. Tug McGraw saved 25 games. Offered in this lot is a stunning commemorative black bat bearing the facsimile signatures of the 1973 Mets players engraved on the bat. There is also text that reads “NEW YORK METS NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONS 1973” in green on the bat. The player names and the inscription are rendered in gold and green ink.
