In 1955 the New York Yankees met the Brooklyn Dodgers in the World Series for the fifth time. The series went a full seven games, with both teams trading close victories. In Game 7, Dodgers starter Johnny Podres threw one of the best games in World Series history, shutting out the Yankees and winning the first ever World Series MVP Award. Although the Yankees lost, 1955 was the season where their immense talent in the post-DiMaggio era began to coalesce. Mickey Mantle ascended into superstardom, smashing 37 home runs and hitting over .300. Whitey Ford made hitters sing the blues to the tune of 18 victories and a 2.63 ERA. The great Yogi Berra remained a steady presence behind the plate, homering 27 times and knocking in over 100 RBI. Offered in this lot is a stunning commemorative black bat bearing the facsimile signatures of the 1955 Yankees players engraved on the bat. There is also text that reads “NEW YORK YANKEES AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONS 1955” in faded green on the bat. Casey Stengel’s facsimile signature displays more prominently with the remaining player names and the inscription are rendered in gold and faded green ink.
