Offered is a 3-D painting by pop artist Steve Sax of former New York Mets centerfielder Tommy Agee.  The 6 x 22 x 24-inch wood board and leather baseball glove, with leather baseball, incorporates the white painted number “396” against a green painted background, representing the centerfield wall at Shea Stadium in Queens, New York. At the lower left is a Cooper leather fielder’s glove with a Rawlings Official League baseball in the web, mounted on a 4 x 5-inch brown wood board representing Agee’s left arm. The lower right of the board features a painting of the top of Agee’s head with eyes and nose, painted in brown, white and black, and a New York Mets cap painted in blue and orange. The back of the painting is painted in blue and orange with the title “Agee” and the artist’s signature “Sax 11”. Sax, born in Brooklyn, NY, studied under noted American artist Red Grooms and has gained fame as a painter and illustrator of sports stars and other celebrities since 2001. Agee played in Major League Baseball as a centerfielder from 1962 through 1973, most notably as a member of the Mets team that became known as the Miracle Mets when they rose from being perennial losers to defeat the favored Baltimore Orioles in the 1969 World Series in one of the most improbable upsets in World Series history. Agee performed two impressive defensive plays in center field to help preserve a Mets victory in the third game of the series, one of which is represented here in Sax’s 3-D painting.
