Offered is a collection of vintage baseball newspaper wire service photographs. This massive collection of several thousand black & white photographs, in varying sizes, was compiled from a number of American news wire services and newspaper syndicates, including the Associated Press, United Press, International News Service, United Press International, King Features Syndicate, Tribune, McClatchy, Hearst and others. In 10 binders, the collection includes Type 1 and Type 3 black & white photographs, some with accompanying captions or editorial direction. These vintage photos include portraits, crowd scenes, game action and candid photos. From spring training to the fall classic, exhibitions, celebrity games, softball games and amateur games, lots of photos of people with bats and balls. Numerous photos chronicle the baseball life of New York City, with fans and plays representing the Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Yankees and New York Giants in what the documentarian Ken Burns called “The Baseball Capital of the World” from approximately 1920 through 1956. Fans lined up for tickets, kids in the stands feeding hot dogs to a kitten at the World Series, other random slices of baseball atmosphere from the era when baseball truly was the national pastime. There are also publicity photos, candid photos of players, managers and others off the field, either at home or on the road, meeting fans, welcoming babies, or attending special functions. Ted Williams in the hospital, clubhouse candid photos, with players in various stages of undress pre- and post-game, gatherings of players and fans together, and members of the Armed Forces listening to games overseas. Arrivals and departures, rallies and parades, celebrations and disappointments fill the 10 binders and several hundred loose photos in this collection. Among the binders are a collection of photos from Major League Baseball’s World Series from the period from 1922 through 1935, a collection of action, candid and posed photos of Hall of Famers and a collection of Hall of Fame New York Yankees. Additional photos in this memorable collection of baseball history include players signing contracts, players being drafted by Major League Baseball, and players and managers modeling clothing and other accessories. In total, this collection comprises a fascinating look at baseball in the U.S. in the 20th century.
