One of a select few Major League baseball players whose names transcend the game, Roberto Clemente is regarded in as much esteem for his humanitarian efforts outside of the baseball arena as he was for anything he accomplished on the playing field. One of his greatest efforts was working to improve living conditions in various Latin American countries and territories. He continued his humanitarian efforts to the last day of his life, dying in a plane crash while attempting to fly relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua on New Year’s Eve 1972.

His untimely death in 1972 meant that not only did the sport lose one of its greatest players, but also that there will always be a very limited supply of his coveted signatures.
