Graded NM-MT 8 by SGC. Hall of Famer, in his Bowman Rookie Card appearance. Satchell Paige became the first African-American pitcher in the American League when Bill Veeck signed him to a Cleveland contract in 1948. Pitching mostly in relief, he finished with a 6-1 record. Fans can only speculate what Paige's major league record would have been if he had been signed before he reached age 40! This is an extremely handsome specimen of Paige's first and only vintage Bowman card. Its portrait details and background hues have remained admirably fresh, and light "touches" to the right-side corners are just fleetingly visible. The card's borders have retained a high degree of their original whiteness, and its subject's likeness reflects superior quality. A thoroughly commendable piece depicting the most celebrated pitcher ever to come out of the Negro Leagues, in Near Mint to Mint condition.
