This Red Sox cap was worn by none other than the man most identified with the franchise, Ted Williams. The style of the Boston “B” on the cap appears to be the style used from 1957 to 1960, making this one of the last caps Williams wore as a player. From 1957 until he retired in 1960, Williams average .329 and banged out 103 home runs. He also won the last two of his six career American League batting championships – and this at the age of 38 to 41! That this cap survived is quite miraculous as in Ted Williams’ time teams usually issued a player one cap for the season, and by October it was often ready for the trash bin. Fortunately, someone had the foresight to preserve this Williams gamer. The classic Red Sox cap has the red Boston “B” embroidered on the front of the crown, trimmed in white. A Tim McAuliffe label is stitched to the white leather interior sweatband which is also stamped with the Pro KM Cap logo and size “7 1/8.” Ted William’s iconic number “9” has been handwritten in faded black marker on the band. The cap shows tremendous game use, with perspiration staining throughout, particularly on the underside of the brim and on the sweat band. There is toning throughout and turf staining present on the crown. In short, this cap looks every bit like the one worn by the best hitter in the game during a long season of campaigning.
