Offered is a vintage 1881 Sarah Bernhardt signed and inscribed photograph in a framed display. The French actress signed her name in black fountain pen across the top center of the 4¼ x 6½-inch sepia toned promotional photo card and inscribed “1881” in black fountain pen below her signature. The photo captures the actress with her hair pinned up, her chin held in her left hand, wearing a frilly dress facing the camera. The photo is captioned “Sarah Bernhardt” in black type across the bottom center, above the caption “37 Union Sq., N.Y.” also in black type in the lower right margin. The photo bears the legend “Copyright 1880 by N. Sarony” reversed out in white. The inscription “Sarony” is in black fountain pen in the lower left edge of the margin. The Bernhardt signed and inscribed photo is mounted in an ivory with brown accent matte and displayed in a 10½ x 12½-inch brown with black accents wood with glass frame. Bernhardt was a French stage actress who starred in some of the most popular French plays of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She made several theatrical tours around the world and was one of the first prominent actresses to make sound recordings and to act in motion pictures. This item comes with a LOA from JSA.
