Presented is a 1935 Joe DiMaggio San Francisco Seals versus Madison Reds promotional poster from May 12, a game in which DiMaggio hit a home run in the sixth inning. The 11 x 14-inch white paper poster is printed in red and blue type, with the legend “More Than $1000 in Cash and Prizes Mission District Baseball Day (Sponsored by Mission District Organizations) at Seals Stadium 16th & Bryant Streets Sunday, May 12th Seals vs. Missions” and notes that there will be two games played that day with the first at 10:45 a.m. and the second at 2:30 p.m. In March 1932, Joe’s older brother Vince made the roster for the minor league San Francisco Seals. When a shortstop was needed, Vince recommended Joe, who then made his professional baseball debut on April 12, 1932 and went on to play three games with the Seals to finish out the 1932 season. In his first full year playing in the minor league, DiMaggio batted .340 with 169 RBIs and 28 home runs. During this season, the future Hall of Fame New York Yankees centerfielder astonished teammates, coaches and fans with a 61-game hitting streak. He quickly began to make a national name for himself, as professional scouts flocked to see him play. Seals Owner Charlie Graham sold DiMaggio to the New York Yankees in November 1934 for $25,000 and five players, although a knee injury kept DiMaggio from reporting to the Yankees immediately that year. Instead, he spent one more year with the Seals before joining the Yankees, and he finished his minor league career with a .389 batting average, 154 RBIs and 34 home runs. The poster is mounted in a 14 ½ x 17 ¼-inch brown matte and displayed on a 15 ½ x 18 ½-inch white poster board.
