After a solid career at the University of Notre Dame, finishing second in the Heisman voting to Jim Plunkett in 1970, quarterback Joe Theismann’s record as a QB with the Irish was 20-3-2 while passing for 4,411 yards and 31 touchdowns. Theismann was selected in the fourth round of the 1971 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins, but chose to sign with the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL. After three seasons in Canada with Toronto, Theismann joined the Washington Redskins for the 1974 season, after they acquired his rights from Miami.

Offered here is the very helmet Theismann wore for his first two seasons with the Washington Redskins in 1974 and 1975. This size 7 1/8 maroon helmet was manufactured by Riddell and features the one-bar facemask which Theismann wore. The Redskins logo decal is adhered on each side of the helmet. A one-inch yellow stripe centers the helmet from front to back with ½-inch white stripes running parallel on the maroon backdrop. Theismann’s number “7” decal is located on the yellow stripe on the base of the back of the helmet. The inside has a suspension padding system with a circular rubber pad flanked by white nylon spokes that act as holders for the inner lining. The ears have padding and “7 1/8” is stamped in black on the upper lining and “2” is stamped on the lower lining. This helmet displays moderate use and Theismann has signed his name in gold marker on the right side of the helmet between the Redskins logo and yellow stripe and inscribed “#7” and “MVP 83”. This helmet comes with a LOA from MEARS for the game use and a STICKER ONLY from Beckett Authentication (C99694) for his signature.
