Every breakout season in Major League Baseball has to have a beginning, and for dynamic hitter Ichiro Suzuki, that beginning came on April 2nd, 2001 against the Oakland Athletics at Safeco Field. Suzuki, who spent 9 seasons playing with the Orix BlueWave of the Nippon Professional Baseball league in Japan, made the jump across the Pacific when he signed with the Seattle Mariners in November of 2000. Suzuki would score one run and record two hits in 5 at-bats during the Opening Day victory. Suzuki would go on to have one of the most extraordinary rookie seasons in MLB history and would earn an All-Star selection, a Golden Glove Award, lead the AL in stolen bases and win the AL batting title. Suzuki would be named the 2001 AL Rookie of the Year and the 2001 AL MVP, becoming the second player in MLB history to achieve both honors in the same season.
