Cal Ripken, Jr. and his former wife Kelly Ripken were presented with this City of Baltimore Proclamation which designated July 16, 1990 as “Kelly and Cal Ripken, Jr. Day” in Baltimore. This comes directly from the personal collection of Cal Ripken, Jr. and “PROCLAMATION” that is prominently displayed atop this 8 ½ x 14-inch document with a gold seal affixed to the bottom left corner. This official proclamation has been signed by the then-Mayor Kurt Schmoke in black pen at the bottom on the “Mayor” line. The proclamation reads “WHEREAS, the City of Baltimore is proud to honor Kelly and Cal Ripken, Jr. who have made an outstanding commitment to Baltimore City; and WHEREAS, Kelly Ripken’s life is full of commitments to help people and her service on the Baltimore Reads’ Board of Directors is evidence of her recognition of the importance of adult learning; and WHEREAS, Cal Ripken, Jr.’s life is full of superlatives, he holds the all time Oriole single season base hit record, and has lent his name to assisting the literacy efforts of Baltimore City; and “WHERAS, today we are celebrating Kelly and Cal Ripken, Jr., the public citizens, the positive role models and the generous benefactors of this learning center; and WHEREAS, Kelly and Cal Ripken, Jr. are making it possible for more  Baltimoreans to learn to read; reading will open up endless horizons of achievement for those who do not yet hold the key; and “WHEREAS, Baltimore: “The City that Reads”, is most grateful for this public spirited donation: the Ripken Learning Center will provide literacy training for adults; and WHEREAS, Kelly and Cal Ripken, Jr. are true Baltimoreans, a family who helps those in need.” This comes with a signed LOA from Cal Ripken, Jr.
