On June 9th, 1973, Secretariat became the first horse in 25 years to win horseracing’s Triple Crown, winning by a historic and record-breaking 31 lengths at the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. The Triple Crown trophy, commissioned after 1950, goes to the three-year old thoroughbred who wins the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and the Belmont Stakes. There have only been 13 Triple Crown winners in all of racing history, and Secretariat’s domination and setting of speed records in all three races in 1973 is still the benchmark for which all thoroughbreds are judged.
Presented here is a 4 x 2-inch paper uncashed $2 dollar ticket from Secretariat’s victory at the Belmont Stakes on June 9th, 1973. The ticket features “OTB” on the right side in white on a maroon background, features the date, location, the amount of the ticket, the race, type, and horse on the left side of the ticket. The reverse side of the ticket features a section for the owner’s name and address, and the terms of the ticket. The ticket is in pristine condition and shows no evidence of cornering or edging. The uncashed ticket would have been good for $2.40 if cashed.
