All great careers must come to an end, and for famed Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz, the end of his career came against the Cleveland Indians on October 10, 2016, when the Red Sox were swept by the Cleveland Indians, losing Game 3 of the American League Divisional Series 4-3. Ortiz, nicknamed “Big Papi” played 14 of his 20 seasons in Major League Baseball with the Red Sox, where the greatest designated hitter in MLB history was instrumental in aiding the Red Sox break “The Curse of the Bambino” and win their first World Series since 1918 in 2004. Ortiz would win two more World Series titles with the team, earning World Series MVP honors in 2013. The 2006 American League home run leader hit 541 home runs during his career earned 10 All-Star selections during his tenure Boston. A clutch hitter, Ortiz was a three-time AL RBI leader who earned seven Silver Slugger Awards. Ortiz leads all designated hitters in MLB history with 485 home runs, 1,569 RBI, and 2,192 hits. Ortiz number 34 was retired by the Red Sox and he is enshrined in the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame.

Presented here are two lineup cards from the October 10, 2016 American League Divisional Series Game 3 between the Indians and the Red Sox signed by Indians Manager Terry Francona (Oritz’s manager for his World Series victories in 2004 and 2007) and Red Sox Manager John Farrell (his manager for Oritz’s World Series title in 2013). The Boston Red Sox white lineup card is labeled OFFICIAL BATTING ORDER BOSTON” in black on the top of the card. The lineup is dated “October 10, 2016” in black on the top right corner of the lineup card. Boston Red Sox logos adorn either side of the top portion of the lineup card. The top of the lineup card is labeled “ORIGINAL”, “CHANGE”, and “ALSO ELIGIBLE” in black. The left side of the lineup card is numbered one through nine and features the names of the batters next to their corresponding number on the lineup, with Ortiz batting fourth. The right side of the lineup lists eligible replacements. Red Sox manager John Farrell signed the portion labeled “MANAGER’S SIGNATURE” in black ink. The card shows excellent signs of use, with batters substituted and crossed out in red ink.

The second item in this lot is a Cleveland Indians Official Batting Order signed by Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona. The blue lineup order features Cleveland Indians iconic Chief Wahoo on the upper left portion of the lineup. “OFFICIAL BATTING ORDER CLEVELAND” is labeled at the top of the lineup card in black. A MLB logo featuring “2016 ALDS” appears on the top-right corner of the lineup card. The top of the lineup card is dated “Monday, October 10, 2016” in black.  The lineup card is labeled “ORIGINAL”, “CHANGE”, and “ALSO ELIGIBLE” in black with the lineup numbered one through nine on the left side of the lineup card. Manager Terry Francona signed the portion of the card labeled “MANAGER’S SIGNATURE” in red ink. The card shows signs of use, with batters substituted and crossed out in red ink. The two lineup cards from the October 10, 2016 Game 3 of the American League Divisional Series between the Red Sox and Indians from the last game of David Ortiz career come with individual LOAs from Beckett Authentication (AA09011 - Francona & AA09012 - Farrel).
