Opening Day Auction 2014

The "Iron Horse" was one of the most beloved sportsmen of the 20th Century, and his career numbers on the diamond were among the very best the game has ever produced, including a .340 career batting average and 493 home runs before his career - and life - were cut short by the debilitating disease that now bears his name. This pin, which measures roughly 1.75" in diameter, reflects a happier time as the Hall of Famer's dry smile is captured in a photo that is surrounded by: "YANKEES" and :LOU GEHRIG." There's a red, white and blue banner attached to the back, along with a tiny figurine (1.5" tall) of a ballplayer holding a bat. This pin was issued during the late 1930s and sold at concession stands in the Bronx.
