As the 1957 season came to a close, Brooklynites realized their greatest fears were in fact a reality - their beloved Dodgers were leaving. On Tuesday September 24, 1957, just 6,702 heartbroken fans made their way through the majestic Marble Rotunda and watched the very last Dodgers game in Ebbets Field. This is a program from that last game. Rookie southpaw Danny McDevitt went the distance, holding Pittsburgh to just 5 hits and striking out 9 Pirates, including a young Roberto Clemente. The scorecard cover features the famous Brooklyn Dodgers cap and a banner proclaiming their string of NL Championships. Danny McDevitt, the very last Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher of record at Ebbets Field has signed the cover in black ink just below the Dodgers script, adding the date “Sept 24, 1957”. Under the championship banner the owner wrote “FINAL GAME” in pencil, and also taped his ticket to the interior scorecard page. A clipped article describing the final game has also been lovingly folded and placed inside this momentous scorecard. Brooklyn scorecards of the 1940’s and 50’s were printed on a low-grade paper that does not age well, but this particular one has survived in remarkable condition, with bright colors on the cover and interior ads and just a small tear in the top of the front cover. A very colorful and attractive piece of Brooklyn Dodgers history.
