One holds the record for major championship wins and the other is heralded for hitting possibly the greatest shot in golf history. There is no question that Jack Nicklaus and Ben Hogan will go down as two of the sport’s all-time greats. This unique display of Nicklaus in a 22x30-inch black frame shows “The Golden Bear” giving a wave from the famous stone bridge at St. Andrews golf course following his final British Open in 2005. In the bottom left corner of the display, Nicklaus is holding the Claret Jug, which he captured three times (1966, 70, 78) as part of his 18 major wins. In the bottom right corner of the display is a limited edition 5 pound note from the Royal Bank of Scotland that includes images of Nicklaus and also commemorates his last British Open. The 22x30-inch Hogan display, also in a black frame, is highlighted by a black-and-white image of the golfer’s amazing 1-iron shot on the 18th hole at Merion Golf Club in the 1950 U.S. Open. It set the stage for a playoff that Hogan eventually won, marking his first victory since a car wreck that nearly killed him 16 months prior. The bottom left corner of the display features a 1989 check signed by Hogan in black ink for $1,736.32 to “Hinkle Oil Co.” The lot is PSA/DNA pre-certified.
