There was little excitement for the Philadelphia Warriors game against the New York Knicks on March 2nd, 1962 at the Hershey Sports Arena in Hersey, Pennsylvania. So little was the excitement, as the game was one of five that remained during the 1961-1962 season that many reporters from New York didn’t attend the game, as most national reporters were busy with MLB Spring Training in Florida, leaving only two photographers and a Warriors PR rep acting as a string reporter for the Associated Press. The game was played in Hershey to help the NBA drum up support for the league in remote areas and many fans turned up to witness the Philadelphia Eagles play an exhibition basketball game against the Baltimore Colts. Yet those who were attendance got to witness history with Warriors third-year center Wilt Chamberlain putting up an astounding 100 points against the Knicks, shattering his own record for points in a game by 22 points. Chamberlain, who once scored 90 points in a high school game in 1955 while playing for Overbrook High School in Philadelphia, was ushered on by Warriors teammates and a crowd of 4,124 who kept screaming “Give it to Wilt! Give it to Wilt” goading the 7’1 center into scoring 100 points. The Knicks intentionally fouled Chamberlain and any Warrior who touched the ball in a vain attempt to keep Wilt from scoring, but it proved futile, as the notoriously poor free-thrower broke the NBA record for most free-throws made. The Warriors eventually defeated the Knicks 169-147, breaking the record for most combined points in a game. Chamberlain, who already laid waste to the most points in a game record, holds the record to this day, with only the late Kobe Bryant’s 81 points during a 2006 game as the closest challenger to his vaunted and astounding record.

Presented here is a 10 ¾ x 8 ¾ -inch program from the March 2ndm 1962 game between the New York Knicks and Philadelphia Warriors when Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points in a single game. The program features “THE WIGWAM” in pink lettering on the white program at the top, just above an image of Wilt Chamberlain and Warriors “Wigwam” logo in pink on the cover of the program. The program lists the date and location of the game as well as information on the exhibition basketball game between the Eagles and the Colts. The price of the program? 35 cents. The program features some staining on the right side of the cover and some elements of toning and cornering. A great commemorative from one of the most memorable moments in NBA history.
