Joe Namath’s flair for fashion and sharp looks helped him become a popular figure in New York when he debuted for the Jets in 1965. Sports Illustrated took notice of his rising fame and put Namath, a Hall of Famer and Super Bowl winner, on the cover of the July 19, 1965 issue of the magazine in his green Jets uniform with Broadway Avenue behind him. The image caught on quick, especially with his teammates, and offensive lineman Sherman Plunkett would give Namath his well-known nickname “Broadway Joe” because of the magazine cover. The name stuck, as evidenced by this signed edition of the magazine. Namath signed the cover in bold, blue Sharpie as follows: “Good Luck! Broadway Joe Namath.” Next to Namath’s portrait is a cover teaser that reads “FOOTBALL GOES SHOW BIZ.” The date and “35 CENTS” appear in the top right corner of the magazine cover. The signed magazine comes with a PSA/DNA COA, certification number “G31210.”
