The last pennant winner in Washington history poses for a team photo on September 25, 1933 before the World Series. The Senators featured some of the most interesting characters in the game: catcher Moe Berg who spoke 8 languages but couldn't hit in any of them, Cecil Travis whose .314 career average is still the highest of any AL shortstop, Hall of Famer Joe Cronin who was later traded by his own father-in-law Clark Griffith and Goose Goslin, one of the best hitters of the period and whose namesake nose can be seen very clearly in this beautiful print. Baseball clown Nick Altrock can be seen sitting in the front row, hit trademark curly hair protruding from beneath his cap. Fred Schulte, center fielder on the team, playfully ducked down low as the photo was taken and can be seen peering over the shoulder of a young Cecil Travis. In the commonly reproduced version of this photo, taken moments earlier or after this one, has Schulte standing up. Front has the written attribution to Rideout Photography Studio and "Washington BaseBall Team American League Champions, 1933". This print comes from the personal collection of pitcher Lefty Stewart, who most likely selected it due to his teammate's plank. The print is a huge 12" x 20" size and though it suffers from some condition issues (it has been torn and repaired with clear tape in 3 places and has numerous other rips and creases) it none-the-less is a unique and attractive piece of Washington baseball history.
