The iconic Diego Maradona joined FC Barcelona in the summer of 1982 for a world-record transfer fee of $7.6 million from Argentina’s Boca Juniors, introducing the diminutive playmaker to the highly-competitive world or European soccer. Maradona took to the European game instantly, scoring a dominant hat trick against Cypriot outfit Apollon Limassol in the prestigious European Cup Winners’ Cup in the Argentine’s debut in international European competition on September 15th, 1982 at Barcelona’s Camp Nou. Maradona’s first goal came just after kickoff in the sixth minute, with a quickfire double at the 60th and 63rd minutes handing the 1986 FIFA World Cup winner a historic troika of goals as Barcelona cruised to an 8-0 first leg victory. Maradona played only two seasons with Barcelona, but his impact on the club and La Liga cannot be overstated.

Offered in this lot is Maradona’s FC Barcelona primary kit from the September 15th, 1982 fixture against Apollon Limassol. This historic jersey features Maradona’s iconic number “10” printed on the back in white numerals over Barca’s timeless red and blue vertical stripes. Barcelona’s crest and a logo for kit manufacturer Meyba are sewn on the jersey’s front. Meyba manufactured the Barcelona kits from 1982 to 1992, a period of great success for the blaugrana. A Meyba tag is sewn on the back inside collar of the kit. The historic Maradona jersey is accompanied by a LOA from Walter Vevis, a forward for Apollon Limassol who acquired the jersey post-game, plus a LOA from MEARS (318068) for the game use.
