His 54-game hit streak during the 1941 season is still a Major League Baseball record. DiMaggio became a cultural icon when he married starlets Dorothy Arnold, divorcing her in 1944. DiMaggio would later marry Marilyn Monroe, their union lasting only nine months, but his love for her remained intact until his death. DiMaggio’s spot as a cultural icon was cemented when he was mentioned in the Simon and Garfunkel hit “Mrs. Robinson,” where the duo nostalgically lamented a happier time gone long since passed. DiMaggio was inducted into Cooperstown in 1955 and remains an inspiration to baseball players everywhere.
