The Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor was issued these three awards in 1980, during his final season with the University of North Carolina Tar Heels. Taylor was a fearsome presence on the UNC defense, recording 16.5 sacks in his final season. Taylor was named to a litany of All-America teams and was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year for his defensive prowess. After the season, Taylor was selected by the New York Giants with the second overall pick of the 1981 NFL Draft. The first award in this lot is a “Linebacker of the Week” plaque presented to Taylor after UNC’s 24-19 victory over the Clemson Tigers on November 8th, 1980. The plaque measures 6 x 4.25 inches. A two gold placards are applied to the front of this trophy. One is printed with a UNC helmet and the second is printed with “Lawrence Taylor / Linebacker Of The Week / UNC vs Clemson 1980”. The second award in this lot is Taylor’s 1980 “Outstanding Linebacker” award presented by UNC. This award measures 9.5 x 12.5 inches. “UNC” is etched on the face of this plaque above a gold placard with the text “University of / North Carolina Football / 1980 / Outstanding Linebacker / LAWRENCE TAYLOR”. The third award measures 9.75 x 12.75 inches. It is also etched with “UNC”, and bears a placard reading “University of / North Carolina Football / 1980 / Defensive MVP / LAWRENCE TAYLOR”. These awards are spectacular display pieces from the collegiate career of the NFL’s greatest defensive player.
