The highlight of this Spalding No. 5 King of the Diamond ball is without question the black ink signature of New York Yankees legend Lou Gehrig residing on the sweet spot. His familiar penmanship projects nicely, and represents one of the hobby's most coveted signatures. The medium itself, though, adds a dash of charisma that would be welcomed in any display and what makes this ball special is the location of Gehrig’s signature, which is not on the customary side panel, but alone on the sweet spot itself. The baseball displays toning from age and some dirt marks are present. Gehrig’s signature has been covered by a 1 x 2 inch shellack strip across the sweet spot and the laces are a combination red and white. The black stampings are still clear with only minor blemishes. This baseball comes with a full LOA from PSA/DNA (S07423). Goldin Auctions will be donating 5% of the winning bid price of this lot and all lots in this auction to the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum.
