The 1984 Major League All-Star Game at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park was the ninth of Mike Schmidt’s 12 mid-summer classics and was most notable for the six strikeouts recorded in succession by National League hurlers Fernando Valenzuela and Dwight Gooden. In an exhibition reminiscent of Carl Hubbell striking out five future Hall-of-Famers in a row (it was also the 50th anniversary of Hubbell’s 1934 performance) Valenzuela set down future Cooperstown inductees, Dave Winfield, Reggie Jackson and George Brett in the top of the fourth and Gooden followed by whiffing Lance Parrish, Chet Lemon and Alvin Davis in the fifth. Montreal Expos catcher Gary Carter hit a solo home run to give the National League a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second and was named the game’s MVP. Schmidt went 0-3 with two strikeouts but was presented by the National League with this nice set of eight silver plated chalices in a felt-lined 16.5” x 15.5” attractive wooden box with a gold colored metal name plate engraved with: “1984 All Star Game Presented to Mike Schmidt” with a red, white and blue National League logo and facsimile signature of league President Charles S. Feeney. Three of the chalices cups have become separated from their stems but the other five are like brand new and none appear to have been used. This is the actual award given to Mike Schmidt, it is not a replica and no duplicates were ever authorized by Schmidt and it comes with a notarized letter of authenticity from Mike Schmidt.
