No fighter in boxing history captured the American mind quite like Muhammad Ali. A boxer so fearsome his nickname is simply “The Greatest,” Ali earned his legendary reputation through a combination of boxing aptitude, revolutionary trash talking, and bold social activism. A heavyweight who compiled a career record of 50 wins and 6 losses, the pugilist formerly known as Cassius Clay contested some of the most famous matches in boxing history, including the Rumble in the Jungle, The Thrilla in Manila, and the Fight of the Century. In addition to his numerous heavyweight belts, Ali captured the gold medal in the light heavyweight weight class at the 1960 Rome Olympics. Ali’s boxing style is best characterized by his famous saying, “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.” Ali’s footwork and speed was unparalleled, allowing him to dance around the ring like a 215 pound Fred Astaire. Combined with his ferocious punching power, Ali was a terror for other fighters over his two decades as a professional fighter.
