Even without Heisman contenders Jim McMahon or Steve Young to lead the charge, LaVell Edwards' Cougars managed an undefeated 13-0 season, capped off with a Holiday Bowl win over Michigan. It was BYU's one-and-only National Championship. To our knowledge, this is the first '84 BYU Cougars football championship ring that has come to auction. Bestowed upon wide receiver Jonathan Plater of Nevada, the 6K-gold, size 10 ring was manufactured by O.C. Tanner and features a gold "1" inlaid in a blue stone, along with nice shank imagery of the stadium, helmet and logo. NM condition.

Accompanied by a unique octagonal ring box and exterior box cover with Plater's recipient label. Also, a 2000 purchase LOA reads: "John Plater, a walk-on freshman, was a linebacker on their championship team. John was in BAD need of money and left his ring with Randy Heaton of Randy's Car and Tire in Provo as collateral for his car repair work. He didn't come back to claim the ring for about 5-6 years. I offer[ed] to buy the ring for what the merchant was into the repairs, but [he] said 'NO,' he was being true to John. I stated that my offer would always be on the table. Many others made offers, a few years passed and my friend, the brother-in-law to Randy Heaton stated that he was ready to sell. It seems John came back for the ring but he wouldn't pay the amount what was owed. That's how I got the ring."
