Roger Maris will forever be remembered as the man who broke the greatest record in sports - Babe Ruth's 60 single-season home run record. The instant fame heaped upon Maris as he approached the magic number was almost too much for this intensely private man to bear, yet he persevered and reached 61 on the last day of the season. A handful of good years followed but none approached that fabled 1961 season. The slugger passed away at the too-young age of 51, long before the autograph craze of the 1990's. As such, a Maris single-signed ball is the most desirable of all the Non-Hall of Famers of the post-war era, and this is one of the finest examples out there. Maris signed his name in black pen on the side panel of this Official Ball 1981 All-Star Game Bowie K. Kuhn Commissioner stamped baseball. The 1981 All-Star Game was played at Municipal Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio and was played on August 9th as the players’ strike lasted from June 12 to July 31. The All-Star Game logo is stamped in red below the stamped sweet spot and this ball displays toning. This comes with a LOA from JSA for Maris’ signature.
