“What might have been?” is the dominant question surrounding Satchel Paige’s career. Unable to play baseball in his prime due to the segregation of the sport, Paige became the oldest rookie in league history at 42 years old in 1948. Paige was one of the great stars of the Negro Leagues, wowing fans with his showmanship, bravado, and pure ability. Paige is best known for his time with the Pittsburgh Crawfords and Kansas City Monarchs, where he was consistently one of the best players in the Negro Leagues.

In 1948, Paige made his debut in the Majors at the ripe old age of 42, going 6-1 with a 2.48 ERA. He played for five more seasons, including one in 1965, when he threw three innings at the age of 58. In 1971, Satchel Paige was inducted into the Hall of Fame. The item offered here is a Rawlings Official League Ball signed by Satchel Paige. He signed his name in black pen, adding the inscription “Best Wishes From” above his signature. The inscription “Hall of Fame 1971” was added in an unknown hand. This item comes with a PSA/DNA LOA (K78117).
