Imagine a world without record players, movies, even the simple light bulb... No doubt without those things we take for granted the 20th Century would have been a very different place. It is even more difficult to imagine that all those things we take for granted and more, were all brought into the world by one man: Thomas Alva Edison. Here we have a signed first edition of the 1911 book “The Boy’s Life of Edison”, one of only two authorized books on the famed inventor, and this one was geared towards his many young admirers. Edison had a difficult childhood, plagued by poverty, a wandering mind and hearing problems, the young boy fought hard to make something of himself, in the end becoming the true embodiment of the American Spirit. His story and success inspired millions of young boys and girls, and this biography, written by his close friend William Meadowcraft, could be found on many childhood bookshelves. But this one is special: the great inventor has signed the first free page in bold black fountain pen “Thomas A. Edison” (9/10) in his famous flourishing handwriting. Below, the author William Meadowcraft has signed and dedicated the book to Edward Marshall, M.D. and dated it June 10, 1912. Dr. Marshall’s signature (he tried admirably to copy Edison’s famous flourish) is on the front cover end paper along with a blue ink stamp bearing his name and address. The book itself is in very good condition. The cover is attached firmly and the gilt lettering is still bright. No dust jacket (as sold). Slight fading on the lower right portion of the olive cover. The spine exhibits slight wear on the top and bottom edges. The interior pages show very few flaws. A very attractive signature from the man who invented the 20th Century. Letter of Authenticity from PSA/DNA.
