Offered here is a complete umpire’s uniform worn by the long-serving umpire Bob Engel. Engel was an umpire from 1965 to 1990, covering 3,630 MLB games. The California native umped in the 1972, 1979, and 1985 World Series, as well as four All-Star Games and six National League Championship Series. Included in this lot is Engel’s navy National League umpire hat, a Wilson A3010 facemask with a dangling neck protector, a navy umpire’s bag, an umpire’s brush, a black chest protector, a navy blazer, and the 1975 Umpire Instructions Manual. The chest protector has Engel’s number “5” handwritten on a piece of white tape. Engel has signed the back of the chest protector in silver marker, inscribing “’NL Umpire’ 1965-1990” in addition to his signature. Engel has signed the facemask in silver marker, inscribing “N.L. Umpire 1965-1990” and writing “#5” under his signature. Please note that the inscription has partially rubbed away. The umpire instruction manual has been signed in black fine-tip marker by Engel, who inscribed “NL Umpire #5” in addition to his signature. The blazer in this lot is navy, with a National League patch sewn on the breast pocket and a white tackle twill “5” is sewn on the right sleeve. An Appel Uniforms tag on the inside of the jacket indicates it was manufactured in 1984. The signed items in this lot come with COAs from JSA (CC55462, CC55463).
