Lot #17: Outstanding 1931 Al Simmons Game Used Hillerich & Bradsby Bat from Batting Crown Season (PSA/DNA GU 9.5) Originates from Al Simmons Estate

Description

Not so much a bat as it is a club, this massive stick was wielded by one of the greatest hitters of all time: Al Simmons. "Bucket Foot Al" had a unique batting stance in that he would step away from a pitch as it hurled towards him, necessitating an extra-long bat. Despite this unorthodox hitting style, Simmons powered the 1929-1931 Philadelphia A's to three pennants and two World Championships, a club many consider the greatest team of all-time. Simmons registered 2,927 career hits, including a high of 253 in 1925, which is fourth all-time for a single season. He hit .350 or better six times, and .390 or better twice, including 1931 from when this bat dates to. That summer Al won the American League batting crown with an even 200 hits and 100 RBI, 37 doubles, 13 triples and 22 homers. As you'd expect from a slugger like Simmons, this un-cracked bat shows excellent game use with many ball marks and stitch impressions found on its barrel. Cleat marks and bat rack paint streaks are clearly visible throughout. The factory stampings are deep and clear, making this massive stick a stunning Hall of Fame display piece. Letter of Authenticity (1B06460) from PSA/DNA giving the bat a near perfect grade of 9.5 . The bat originates from Al Simmons Estate.
