Holiday Auction Closing December 3

Lot #15: Circa 1968 Lou Gehrig Original Framed Artwork on Board by LeRoy Neiman In 23 x 26 Framed Display (PSA/DNA)

Description

Back in 2004 when it last surfaced on the auction block, this one-of-a-kind vintage rendering brought a final bid of over $18,000—and that was while the master artist was still alive and working. Since his death in 2012 at age 91, Neiman's originals have only increased in value, so it will be quite interesting to now see how the market responds to such a rare subject and scarce style. To our knowledge, this is the sole Gehrig piece of Neiman's entire career, and according to the 2004 auction description, LeRoy himself remembered it as a fond favorite from his 1960s period. The pinstripes, the husky physique, the powerful follow-through—there's no mistaking the Iron Horse in Neiman's sleek, understated tribute. And both the watercolor medium and black-and-white palette draw an intriguingly stark contrast with his more common colorful creations in oil. Gehrig's name is hand-captioned at lower left, opposite Neiman's pencil "10" signature. The art board measures approximately 17 ½ x 14 ½ inches (minor peripheral wear) within an elegant matted-and-framed presentation spanning 26 x 23 inches. This item comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (AB11524).
