Lot #6: 1965-68 Roberto Clemente Game Used Louisville Slugger U1 Model Bat (PSA/DNA GU 9)

Description

This bat, simply put, is baseball history. The great Roberto Clemente swung this piece of Louisville-made lumber during the 1965-1968 seasons, the undeniable “sweet spot” of his Hall of Fame career. During that four-year period, Puerto Rico's greatest ballplayer won a pair of batting titles (1965 and 1967), an MVP Award (1966), tallied his greatest offensive season (1967) and won the Golden Glove for his outfield work every year. With a four-year resume like that, one could not ask for a more significant Roberto Clemente bat.

The Hillerich & Bradsby U1 model bat exhibits tremendous use with a professionally repaired handle crack. The barrel is covered with ball marks with stitch impressions. There are bat rack paint streaks visible and a light coat of pine tar still clings to its handle. The model number “U1” is stamped into the knob and the bat’s weight “34” is hand written in pencil. The ash has taken on a golden glow with age and Clemente’s immortal number “21” written in vintage black marker completes this incredible gamer. Any game used piece from the great Clemente is significant, but a game used bat dated to his finest seasons takes things to an entirely different level. The bat comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (1B13014) for the game use and has been graded a near-perfect GU 9.
