Lot #98: 1998-1999 Ken Griffey Jr. Game Used Seattle Mariners Navy Alternate Jersey (MEARS A10, Griffey COA & JSA)

Description

The Hall of Fame centerfielder Ken Griffey Jr. spent the last few years of the 1990’s blasting home runs into recesses of the massive Seattle Kingdome as he led the American League in homers in 1997, 1998, and 1999. The franchise savior followed up his 1997 American League MVP season with another fantastic effort in 1998, crushing 56 home runs with 146 RBI and a healthy .284 batting average. Griffey, Alex Rodriguez, and Edgar Martinez anchored an elite batting order for Lou Piniella’s Mariners, combining for an incredible 127 home runs between the three sluggers. In 1999, Griffey again led the AL in homers, going yard 48 times, with 134 RBI and a nearly-identical .285 batting average. Griffey’s tear in the late 1990’s is nearly unparalleled in baseball history, with the Donora, PA., native entering the National Baseball Hall of Fame on his first ballot after hitting 630 home runs with .284 batting average.

Offered in this lot is a navy Mariners alternate jersey worn by Griffey in the 1998-99 era. “MARINERS” is sewn across the chest of this mesh button-down in white, silver, and teal tackle twill. A Mariners logo is sewn on the left sleeve and a Majestic logo is sewn on the right. “GRIFFEY” is sewn across the back shoulders in silver and teal tackle twill over a matching navy nameplate. “The Kid’s” number “24” is sewn on the back of the jersey in silver and teal tackle twill. A Majestic tag with an attached size “48” flag is sewn on the front left tail. Griffey has signed the “4” digit on the back of the jersey in blue marker. This jersey comes with a LOA from MEARS (316292) assigning the item its highest grade of A10, a Griffey COA, and a LOA from JSA for Griffey’s signature.
